Hour 12 – 2o years of pure JOY

JOY 94.9 is a gay and lesbian volunteer-based community radio station committed to providing a voice for the diverse lesbian and gay communities, enabling freedom of expression, the breaking-down of isolation and the celebration of our culture, achievements and pride.

Host Bek Savic opens with two JOY 94.9 board members, president Jed Gilbert and secretary Sammy Cameron. Jed and Sammy reveal how they came to be at JOY 94.9 and why they love JOY. Together they explore why JOY is essential as the voice of the community it serves.

Jed then discusses the evolution of JOY 94.9’s strategic plan, which is soon to be released, and how the media landscape is evolving. These factors will play a great part in JOY’s future and how it connects and communicates with its community. Jed and Sammy share their vision for a media organisation founded in community, dedicated to diversity, advocating for understanding and acceptance, and servicing local and international audiences via multiple platforms.

The general manager of the station, Conrad Browne, joins the conversation. After relating how he came to be at JOY, Conrad recalls the controversy that surrounded the integration of SMS technology at JOY. He looks forward to the day that digital technology will deliver the station to the world.

World AIDS Day Worldwide inspiration partner Chris Dancy, from Tomorrow’s Future Today, explains how he came to be involved with today’s broadcast, drawing from concepts he has previously delivered on an international scale. Having lost a partner to HIV, Chris’ connection to the project is a very personal one.
