Following Matt McDonell’s introduction to the hour, Dean Beck speaks with Ross Hutton, manager of strategy, partnership and resources for the Oil Search Health Foundation (OSHF). Starting his career in nursing, Ross now integrates primary health services in some of the most remote areas of the Asia-Pacific region, particularly Papua New Guinea.
Since starting its PNG HIV program in 2007, OSHF has facilitated 130,000 HIV tests, over 350 people receiving antiretroviral treatment, and the distribution of 350,000 condoms in 2012 alone, covering nine provinces throughout PNG. Working alongside the Global Fund, the OSHF is an example of how the business sector can make a real difference on the ground for those living in remote areas.
Matt then introduces the press conference held immediately after the formal proceedings at Government House earlier on World AIDS Day. During the brief conference we hear from the head of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibé; UNAIDS Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination Daw Aung San Suu Kyi; Australia’s federal foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop; Victoria’s health minister the Hon. David Davis; and Professor Sharon Lewin.
Following the press conference, Matt introduces Dean’s interview with federal senator Louise Pratt, who is a member of the Ministerial Advisory Council on Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections. Senator Pratt discusses the bipartisan support HIV issues have received over the years and highlights the extensive work that needs to be done if Australia is to achieve its global commitment to halve the number of annual new HIV infections by 2015.
Dean then joins Matt in the studio to wrap up the conversation about HIV being a multibillion-dollar industry, ahead of the 20th International AIDS Conference coming to Melbourne in July 2014.
